Cabinet Ministers Demand Starmer Resign Amid Leadership Crisis
Prime Minister Keir Starmer faces an unprecedented revolt as at least three Cabinet ministers, including Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, have reportedly told him to quit following disastrous local election results, pushing the Labour Party into a full-blown leadership crisis.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer is on the brink, with Cabinet ministers now openly demanding his resignation. According to the Daily Express Politics, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is among at least three senior figures who have told Starmer it is time to step down, following a catastrophic performance in the recent local elections.
This internal rebellion comes after four ministerial aides resigned and approximately 80 Labour MPs called for a leadership contest. The pressure mounted after critics rejected Starmer's attempt to move on from Labour’s humiliating losses, which saw the party lose nearly 1,500 English councillors and slump to third place in Wales, as reported by the Daily Express.
Parliamentary Private Secretary Tom Rutland, who resigned his position, stated, "It is with regret that I believe the Prime Minister should now set out a timetable for his departure." Another aide, Melanie Ward, delivered a scathing assessment, saying, "It is clear that the Prime Minister no longer has the trust or confidence of the public to lead this change." Starmer, however, defiantly told reporters, "I’m not going to shy away from the fact that I’ve got some doubters... I have to prove them wrong, and I will."
This extraordinary internal challenge means ordinary Labour voters are watching their party tear itself apart, just as it should be presenting a united front. The calls for Starmer to set a timetable for his departure highlight a deep fracture, with factions already positioning themselves for a bitter leadership battle. This infighting risks alienating the very people Labour claims to represent, leaving them with little faith in the party's ability to govern.
The Daily Express reports that this political turmoil sets the stage for a potential leadership contest as early as Tuesday, with Wes Streeting and Angela Rayner reportedly ready to launch bids. The outcome will determine whether the party embraces a swift resolution, potentially favouring Streeting, or delays to allow Andy Burnham to return to Westminster, a move backed by the Left-wing of the party.
