French Authorities Accused of Guiding Migrants to UK Waters
French rescue vessels are reportedly showing Channel migrants the way to UK waters and even refuelling their boats, according to a Daily Express investigation, sparking outrage over the new £660 million pact with France.

French authorities are actively directing Channel migrants towards Britain, even assisting with navigation and refuelling, according to a shocking Daily Express report. This comes despite a new £660 million agreement between the UK and France aimed at stopping illegal crossings. The revelations suggest a blatant disregard for the spirit of the deal, raising serious questions about France's commitment.
The Daily Express details how French rescue vessels pull alongside migrant dinghies, waiting as asylum seekers refuel. Worse still, if migrants veer off course, French officers reportedly divert them back towards UK waters. This staggering admission emerged during a BBC investigation into a suspected people smuggler, directly contradicting the stated purpose of the substantial British financial aid.
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp, speaking to the Daily Express, called the situation “jaw-dropping.” He stated, “Labour Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has just agreed to pay the French over half a billion pounds of our money, mostly unconditionally. The French authorities have repaid that by actively helping illegal immigrants cross the Channel.” Migrants themselves confirmed this, with one telling the BBC, “Those people who drive the boat, when they went in the wrong direction, the French told us, go that way. They gave us a way to go.”
This alleged complicity from French authorities makes a mockery of the significant investment of British taxpayer money, which includes £500 million for increased police patrols, a new interception vessel, helicopters, drones, and camera surveillance. It means ordinary British people are effectively paying France to facilitate illegal crossings, rather than prevent them. The human cost is also clear, with 96,002 asylum seekers arriving in small boats between 2018 and 2025, yet only 0.5% of them have been returned to their home countries.
The Home Office claims the new deal will deploy almost 1,100 officers in Northern France to track migrants and snare smugglers. However, the Daily Express report indicates that without a fundamental shift in French behaviour, this increased presence may simply lead to more guided tours across the Channel, leaving the UK to deal with the consequences of an open-door policy facilitated by a supposed ally.
