Germany Urges Europe to Defend Itself Amid US Troop Withdrawal

Europe must now shoulder more responsibility for its own defence, according to German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius. This stark declaration comes as the United States confirms plans to pull 5,000 troops from Germany, a significant reduction in America's military presence on the continent.

This troop withdrawal was, according to POLITICO UK, anticipated. Minister Pistorius himself stated, "It was anticipated that the U.S. might withdraw troops from Europe, including Germany." He stressed that for the transatlantic alliance to endure, Europe must strengthen its own pillar within NATO, pointing to Germany's ongoing military buildup.

NATO, as reported by POLITICO UK, is now "working with the U.S. to understand the details" of the Pentagon's decision. NATO spokesperson Allison Hart explicitly stated that this move by the Trump administration "underscores the need for Europe to invest more in defense." This follows previous threats from then-President Donald Trump amid a public spat with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

With a reduced American footprint, the continent's ability to defend itself from external threats becomes paramount. The Pentagon's announcement, delivered by spokesperson Sean Parnell, confirms Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the withdrawal based on "conditions on the ground." This significant reduction, reversing a previous buildup under President Joe Biden, is expected to be completed within the next six to twelve months, leaving Europe to confront its new security reality.
