The government is poised to announce the full nationalisation of British Steel, a year after taking over its daily operations. This dramatic step, expected in the King’s Speech this week, aims to safeguard 3,500 jobs at the Scunthorpe plant and preserve Britain’s primary steel-making capability, as reported by The Guardian Politics.

This follows a period of significant uncertainty for the steelmaker. British Steel, which operates the UK’s last two blast furnaces, came under government control last April amidst fears its Chinese owner, Jingye, planned to shut down the site. Jingye had previously bought the company out of insolvency in 2020, but negotiations over an upgrade to electric arc furnaces ultimately failed, leading Jingye to plan closure of the blast furnaces by April 2025.

Despite a government spokesperson stating, “We’ve been clear that safeguarding UK steel making is our priority,” and confirming “discussions are ongoing and no conclusion or decision has yet been reached,” The Sunday Times anticipates the nationalisation announcement. This indicates a significant shift from the private sector solutions previously sought, including interest from potential buyers like Miami-based investor Michael Flacks.

For ordinary people, this means a reprieve for thousands of families in Scunthorpe and across the extended steel supply chain, which supports tens of thousands of jobs. The closure would have ended Britain’s ability to make steel from scratch, a critical industrial capability. However, the cost of keeping British Steel afloat has been substantial, reaching £377 million by January this year and potentially exceeding £1.5 billion by 2028, according to estimates from the National Audit Office.

This impending nationalisation marks a full circle for British Steel, which was originally nationalised by Harold Wilson’s Labour government in 1967, privatised by Margaret Thatcher, and now returns to state control under a Conservative government, with the King’s Speech on Wednesday set to confirm the future of Britain’s foundational industry.
