A Labour minister has defended the decision not to increase the prison sentence of a child rapist, claiming the 23-year-old offender was 'too immature' for a longer term. This astonishing position, taken by Solicitor General Ellie Reeves, concerns Ahmad Mulakhil, an Afghan migrant who raped a 12-year-old schoolgirl in Nuneaton, as reported by the Daily Express Politics.

Mulakhil, who lured his victim to a secluded area, filmed the attack, and then tried to blame her, was jailed for 15 years in March. However, Shadow Home Office minister Alicia Kearns pushed for the sentence to be reviewed under the unduly lenient sentence scheme, arguing it was far too short given the horrific nature of the crime. Her appeal was rejected.

Ms Kearns blasted the decision, stating, “Ahmad Mulakhil raped a 12-year-old child, yet a judge and our Government deem him ‘too immature’ at 23 to grasp the gravity of his crime.” She added, “This is Britain under Labour: a 16-year-old can vote, but offenders in their 20s aren’t old enough to be held accountable for abusing a child.” Solicitor General Reeves responded that the judge considered mitigating factors, including the offender’s “immaturity by reason of his age.”

This stance from a senior Labour figure raises serious concerns for ordinary British people about the justice system's priorities. It suggests that the perceived 'immaturity' of a 23-year-old man who committed such a heinous act can outweigh the trauma inflicted on a vulnerable child, despite sentencing guidelines allowing for a 19-year term. The victim, a looked-after child with vulnerabilities, suffered significant psychological harm, according to Ms Reeves' own statement.

The consequence of this decision is clear: Ahmad Mulakhil will serve a 15-year sentence for his depraved actions, despite calls for it to be increased, leaving a 12-year-old girl to live with the consequences while the justice system prioritises the 'immaturity' of her 23-year-old rapist.
