Labour's plan to move English language tests for visa applicants entirely online has been branded a "fundamental mistake" by a prominent Labour peer, Lord Smith, as reported by the Daily Express. This £816 million initiative, championed by Sir Keir Starmer, aims to replace secure in-person testing with a fully digital approach, allowing tests to be taken from any location.

This controversial shift comes despite warnings from the English Language Testing System (IELTS) consortium, which currently conducts most in-person tests. According to the Daily Express, IELTS cautioned Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood that an online-only system could be exploited by fraudsters and criminal gangs, undermining the integrity of the visa process.

Lord Smith, a former Cabinet minister under Sir Tony Blair, did not mince words, stating in The Telegraph that it would be "foolish to persist" with these plans. He added, "The present system of tests taking place in person in secure locations around the world works well. These plans risk putting all of this in jeopardy. I urge the Government to think again."

This move directly contradicts the Home Secretary's stated goal of raising English language standards for migrants from GCSE to A-level equivalent. Ordinary British people will rightly question how a less secure, online system can possibly achieve higher standards when the risk of cheating is dramatically increased, potentially allowing individuals with insufficient English to enter the country.

The Home Office, which launched a tender for these remote tests last November, claims it is still seeking a provider to meet the highest data security and fraud prevention thresholds. However, the December operational target for this new system looms, and the concerns raised by Lord Smith and industry experts demand immediate and serious reconsideration before this potentially disastrous policy is implemented.
