Polanski Slams Labour Over Protest Crackdown, Defends Marches
Green Party leader Zack Polanski has attacked Labour's stance on pro-Palestine protests, vowing to fight any new restrictions on demonstrations. This comes as the Metropolitan Police review future marches following a terror threat level increase.

Green Party leader Zack Polanski has publicly criticised Labour after Sir Keir Starmer indicated a tougher approach to pro-Palestine protests. Sir Keir stated the government needed to “go further” following the stabbing of two Jewish men in Golders Green. This move aligns with the Metropolitan Police reviewing whether future marches can proceed, particularly after the UK terrorism threat level was raised to “severe.” London has seen regular pro-Palestine demonstrations since late 2023, with accusations of antisemitic chanting and signs at some events.
Mr Polanski, however, has pledged to oppose any new restrictions on protests. He told The Independent that it is “an outrage that this increasingly authoritarian government would now seek to use the pain of the Jewish community to seek further restrictions on the rights to peaceful protest.” He added, “The Green Party will fight any restrictions on peaceful protest, whatever the cause, every step of the way.” This position sets the Green Party against potential government and police actions aimed at limiting public demonstrations.
This strong stance by Mr Polanski follows recent controversy where he was criticised by the head of the Met Police. Mr Polanski had retweeted a post on X alleging officers “repeatedly and violently kicking a mentally ill man in the head” after he had been tasered in Golders Green. Met Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley described Mr Polanski’s retweet as “inaccurate and misinformed” and expressed disappointment. In a letter to the Green leader, Sir Mark stated, “Your decision to criticise these officers, using your public profile and reach will have a chilling effect.” A Green Party spokesperson later acknowledged that Mr Polanski “knows it was a very difficult situation for the authorities.”
The implications for ordinary people are clear: the right to protest, a cornerstone of British liberty, is under scrutiny. While the government and police cite public safety and rising terror threats, particularly after the Golders Green incident, groups like the Stop the War Coalition maintain that linking recent attacks to marches is “false.” The debate pits security concerns against fundamental freedoms, with politicians taking sides and potentially shaping how future public dissent is managed.
The Stop the War Coalition is planning a significant demonstration in London on May 16 to observe Nakba Day, commemorating the 1948 displacement of Palestinians. This upcoming event will likely be a key test case for the Met Police’s review and the government’s new stance on protests. The outcome will show whether the authorities will indeed “go further” in restricting demonstrations, and how Mr Polanski’s promised opposition will manifest.
