Starmer Deepens EU Defence Ties, Joins Ukraine Loan Talks
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has initiated talks for the UK to join the European Union's £78 billion loan fund for Ukraine, signalling a significant deepening of defence cooperation with the bloc and a clear shift in post-Brexit foreign policy.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has begun negotiations for Britain to participate in the European Union's massive £78 billion loan scheme for Ukraine. This move, reported by the Daily Express, sees the UK actively seeking closer defence ties with Brussels, a stark departure from previous post-Brexit stances.
This bid comes as Sir Keir attends a European gathering in Armenia, where he is telling leaders that Britain wants to work more closely to ensure Ukraine receives vital military equipment. According to the Daily Express, this participation in the loan scheme, recently approved by the EU after a lengthy impasse with Hungary, is a key part of the Prime Minister's 'reset' with Brussels.
Prime Minister Starmer stated, and we quote: “When the UK and the European Union work together, we all reap the benefits — and in these volatile times we need to go further and faster on defence to keep people safe.” He further added: “I will always act in our national interest: protecting our security, supporting our allies, and delivering jobs and stability at home.” However, Shadow Foreign Secretary Dame Priti Patel was quick to criticise, saying: “Starmer would rather spend on welfare than warfare.”
For ordinary British people, this means a potential shift in how their government prioritises defence spending and international alliances. While the Prime Minister frames it as an opportunity for British defence firms to compete for contracts and support Ukraine, the Conservative opposition questions Labour's commitment to domestic defence spending, highlighting the missing Defence Investment Plan for Autumn 2025.
Negotiations on the parameters of the UK's access to this EU loan for Ukraine are set to commence in the coming weeks, a process that will define the extent of Britain's financial and strategic entanglement with the bloc under this new government.
