Prime Minister Keir Starmer has made it crystal clear: he will not quit without a formal leadership challenge, daring his critics to make their move. This comes as his government faces increasing pressure and internal dissent, with one minister already resigning.

According to The Guardian, Starmer informed his cabinet that the threshold for a leadership challenge had not been met, effectively shutting down any immediate calls for his resignation. He swiftly moved the discussion to the Middle East, preventing critics from responding directly during the Tuesday meeting. This firm stance follows reports of several ministers suggesting he consider his position.

"The Labour party has a process for challenging a leader and that has not been triggered," Prime Minister Starmer told his cabinet, as quoted by The Guardian. He added, "The country expects us to get on with governing. That is what I am doing and what we must do as a cabinet." Home Office minister Jess Phillips, a close ally of Wes Streeting, resigned shortly after, stating she "cannot continue to serve as a minister under the current leadership."

This defiant posture from Starmer means the ball is now firmly in the court of his potential challengers, most notably Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who has stated he would join a contest if one were initiated. The political fallout is significant, with cabinet ministers publicly rallying around Starmer, while privately, some are furious at what they perceive as Streeting's attempts to destabilise the government.

With over 80 MPs now calling for Starmer to set a timetable for his departure, the prime minister's refusal to concede means the internal battle for Labour's leadership will continue to simmer, leaving the party in a state of open warfare until a formal challenge is either launched or definitively ruled out.
