Sir Keir Starmer stands accused of a “total stitch-up” by critics, after reportedly nominating David Gauke, a prominent anti-Brexiteer, for a knighthood. This move, reported by the Daily Express, comes despite Gauke's long history of attempting to reverse the outcome of the Brexit referendum, igniting a political firestorm.

Gauke, a former Tory MP, was expelled from the Conservative party by Boris Johnson for repeatedly voting against Brexit. He subsequently lost his seat as an independent, with voters rejecting his bid to undo the largest democratic vote in British history, according to the Daily Express. He even backed a Rejoin EU candidate in the 2024 General Election before Starmer appointed him to lead a prison sentencing review in October.

Conservative Campaign Headquarters officials are reportedly furious. A spokesman told the Express that Kemi Badenoch was “absolutely livid” and accused Sir Keir of sneaking the appointment through “to stop Kemi vetoing it.” An insider blasted, “Now he’s doing Labour’s bidding on sentencing,” adding that Gauke had “bagged himself a knighthood.”

This reported honour for a figure who actively campaigned against the will of the British people on Brexit will undoubtedly leave many ordinary Britons questioning the political establishment's priorities. It highlights a perceived disconnect between the democratic mandate and the rewards bestowed within Westminster circles, especially given Gauke's controversial recommendations for early prisoner release during his sentencing review.

The political fallout from this decision is likely to be significant, further fuelling public cynicism about how honours are awarded and whether they genuinely reflect service to the nation, rather than political convenience or reward for specific ideological stances.
