Starmer Pledges UK Funds for EU Ukraine Loan Scheme
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has initiated negotiations for Britain to join the EU’s £78 billion loan scheme for Ukraine, arguing the benefits outweigh the costs for the UK.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has begun talks for the UK to participate in the European Union’s £78 billion loan scheme for Ukraine, a move that could see British taxpayers contributing to Brussels’ coffers. According to The Guardian, Starmer used a European Political Community summit in Armenia to push for this closer alignment, despite the financial implications.
The decision comes as European leaders express concern over waning US interest in the Ukraine conflict, particularly amid heightened tensions with Donald Trump. The Guardian reports that Starmer is leveraging these anxieties to advocate for a “closer relationship with the EU,” claiming it is “in our national interest” and crucial for bolstering European defence.
Starmer told reporters at the summit, “The benefit there outweighs the cost. But more generally, it is important that we see our future as a closer relationship with the EU.” He also stated, “We cannot deny that some of the alliances that we have come to rely on are not in the place we would want them to be.” This indicates a clear shift towards European integration, driven by perceived instability in traditional alliances.
For ordinary British people, this means a potential financial contribution of up to £400 million to the EU scheme, initially from existing Ukraine aid funds. However, Brussels expects the UK to “go further” in contributing to its budgets for future market access, as reported by The Guardian. This raises questions about the long-term financial burden on the British taxpayer for closer ties with the bloc.
The Cabinet Office is now auditing which sectors could benefit most from deeper integration, with cars, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals identified as priorities. This audit will dictate the extent of future financial contributions, as the UK aims for “deeper economic integration” with the EU, a path that will be further explored at the UK-EU summit this summer.
