Asylum Seeker Returned to France Faces Deportation to Syria
A Kurdish Syrian man, sent back to France under the UK's 'one in, one out' scheme, now faces deportation to Syria after his asylum claim was rejected, raising serious questions about the safety of such returns.

A Syrian asylum seeker, forcibly returned to France under the controversial 'one in, one out' deal, now faces the terrifying prospect of being sent back to Syria itself. This revelation, reported by The Guardian, marks what is believed to be the first instance of a person returned to France under the scheme then having their asylum claim rejected, with French authorities deeming Syria safe for his return.
This alarming development directly contradicts assurances given when Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron launched their 'groundbreaking' deal in July 2025. They explicitly stated that France was a safe country for those returned, yet this 26-year-old Kurdish man, who fled forced conscription by the YPG militia, has had his French asylum claim dismissed, with the rejection letter stating Syria will be safe for him.
The man himself, whose interview with French authorities reportedly focused heavily on proving his village residency, expressed his despair. He told The Guardian, "I didn't want to go to war and kill people." He added, "I am the first asylum seeker returned to France to receive this rejection. If I go back to Syria, the YPG militia will get me. What should I do?"
This case exposes the stark reality and potential human cost of the 'one in, one out' policy, which has seen 561 people removed to France since September 2025. Immigration solicitor Sonia Lenegan warned, as cited by The Guardian, that this case is "an example of the real risk involved in returning people to France," potentially violating the refugee convention by exposing individuals to persecution in their home countries.
The Home Office, according to The Guardian, maintains that Syrian asylum seekers in the UK whose claims are rejected would face return if safe, and that they are working with Syrian authorities. However, this man now faces a return to a war-torn country where he fears forced conscription, a direct consequence of a policy designed to alleviate Britain's own border pressures.
